Community Bank Delaware donates school supplies
Community Bank Delaware is going back to school. Not in the literal sense, but in spirit, through the donation of bookbags and school supplies to students via the Rehoboth Beach and Oak Orchard Boys and Girls Clubs and the Sussex YMCA.
Led by Community Bank employees Claire Keane, Sally King and Yolanda Bernoski, the 2013 School Supply Drive was funded by donations of cash and school supplies from employees, the bank’s board of directors and customers. The project was the brainchild of Keane, a customer service representative in the bank’s Rehoboth office.
“These things are expensive,” says Keane, who came up with the idea after shopping for supplies with her daughter Abbie. “I just have one child to buy for. I can’t imagine the cost of shopping for two or three. It would be overwhelming. “
Soon bank employees were filling up the barrels located in each office and customers were donating their change and making special trips to drop off supplies. Bank board member Kathy Newcomb, whose mother Ronnie Kiernan has made two trips with donations for the project, said after making her donation, “I cannot imagine the feeling of looking around at other students who all have brand new school supplies and not having the same. “
As Community Bank staff delivers the supplies they will begin immediately working on the next community project which is geared toward the upcoming holidays. The project, titled, “My Favorite Book,” will involve the collection and distribution of favorite childhood and young adult books.
“This is another great community project we can add to our annual calendar of projects,” says Lynda Messick, bank president and chief executive officer. “It is focused on children, and that tugs at all of our heartstrings.”
