Community members rescue Safe Haven cats

By Libby Stiff | Aug 07, 2013

When a domesticated animal enters a shelter, Delaware state law requires the animal to be medically examined and vaccinated. Cats are the stepchildren of rescued animals. Safe Haven had 80-plus cats. When Safe Haven indicated that the cats had to be moved to an undesirable location to make room for dogs, Josie’s Place and other small rescue groups, under cover of darkness, spirited away Safe Havens cats. Over 20 of these cats needed spaying or neutering. The Delaware SPCA, Georgetown, agreed to perform the necessary surgical and vaccination care at a reduced rate.

Lois Cortese, Jill Stokes, Judy Olsen, Joanne Kempton, Dale Sheldon, Rehoboth City Commissioner Pat Coluzzi, Merrijane Pierce, Bea Wagner, Shellee Peeling, Frank Cooper, Karen Petermann, Andrea Monetti, and Rehoboth City Commissioner-elect Toni Sharp stepped up and donated the $721 for the surgeries and vaccinations for 12 cats.

I, perhaps unfairly, reached out to my friends. But, as usual, they reached back. Thank you, guys and the cats thank you. You’re the best.
