Construction to close part of Park Road near UD’s Lewes campus

Work begins Oct. 9
Oct 01, 2013

A portion of Park Road on Cape Henlopen State Park property in Lewes will be closed after Wednesday, Oct. 9, due to a construction project overseen by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Parks and Recreation.

The existing road will be resurfaced and realigned, and a shared-use pedestrian/bicycle path will be added. Completion of the project is expected in March 2014.

Park Road connects New Road and Pilottown Road, and is commonly used as an alternative route to the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment/Hugh R. Sharp Campus, the Lewes Public Boat Ramp, U.S. Coast Guard Station and Lewes Dairy, as well as other businesses and residences along Pilottown Road.

These locations will remain accessible by turning left at the intersection of New Road and Pilottown Road. The closure will not affect the residents of Canary Creek Villas, who will be able to enter via New Road.

The realignment of Park Road will bypass the University of Delaware’s campus and create a new intersection at Pilottown Road to allow future traffic to travel from New Road to Pilottown Road without crossing the Sharp Campus.
