Crash kills Milford principal, daughter
The principal of Milford Central Academy was killed April 11 in a crash along Barretts Chapel Road near Frederica that also killed her 10-year-old daughter.
Tricia Martin, 42, of Camden was driving a 2009 Acura MDX at 10:40 p.m. westbound on Barratts Chapel Road east of McGinnis Pond Road when for unknown reasons she crossed over the eastbound lanes into a ditch and collided with a telephone box and a fence, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
The vehicle then struck an embankment causing it to turn over into the eastbound lane facing westbound, Fournier said.
Martin was inside the vehicle and her 10-year-old daughter, Taryn Martin, got out and tried to get help from a passer-by who had stopped.
As the girl sought assistance, a 2005 GMC Yukon traveling eastbound on Barratts Chapel Road struck the Acura pushing it eastbound into a ditch where the Acura turned rightside up and stopped facing westbound, Fournier said.
Martin was ejected from the Acura and thrown onto the roadway; Taryn, who was standing outside of the Acura, was struck by one of the vehicles and thrown onto the south side of the roadway and onto the grass, Fournier said.
Martin was flown by the Delaware State Police helicopter to Christiana Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Taryn was taken to Kent General Hospital and later transported to A.I. DuPont Hospital where she has since died, a hospital spokesman said.
The driver of the GMC Yukon, Richard Triola, 49, of Magnolia was treated at Kent General Hospital for injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Fournier said.
Fournier said the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.
