The 30th annual Dam Mill 5K contested Aug. 3 was won by 34-year-old David McCollam from Bridgeport, W.Va., in the blistering time of 15:34. It was the fifth fastest time ever run in the Dam Mill series.

McCollam ran the 2013 Boston marathon in 2:29.

Enos Benbow was second in 16:51 followed by Adam Houston, 17, from Seattle, Wash., in 17:46.

Soon after all 173 runners had finished the race and were knocking about Cupola Park waiting for the awards presentations, a medical alert reached the standby paramedic truck. A 66-year-old runner, Carl Hatfield, also from Bridgeport, was having chest discomfort and all signs pointed to a serious cardiac event.

Hatfield, a member of the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame and the father-in-law of the winner, had run the race in 31 minutes. Hatfield was a two- time All-American cross country runner at West Virginia and is considered the school's all-time distance runner.

Hatfield, a descendant of the Hatfield and McCoy clans, led the West Virginia Track Club to the Boston Marathon team championship in 1974 and the AAU team title in 1978.

Both runners with stories to tell were on the way to Beebe Medical Center soon after the race. Unofficial reports later indicated Carl Hatfield was doing well.

Lillian McCormiek placed first overall for women in 19:15, followed by Cindy Conant in 19:29 and Bethany Killmon in 20:30.
