DCHS app development course shines light on future

Delmarva Christian High School is equipping students to thrive in the fast-paced world of technology. The recent spring semester offered students an app development course, a first for the school.

“An app [short for application software] is a small program built for a device and used to interact with technology,” says Kolby Dukes, instructor and DCHS alumnus. As a University of Delaware graduate with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Dukes understands app development.

The students in Dukes’ class worked on learning the basics of code for the first half of the semester. There were 15 students in the class. The first projects were tip calculators and unit converters, but they steadily increased in difficulty. The culmination of learning code ended with the students building a simple hangman app. Dukes increased the difficulty of the class during the second half of the semester by having each student work on his or her own unique project. One student developed her own electronic drum app, one his own weather app with a darkening or lightening screen depending on the time of day.

Dukes is enthusiastic about Delmarva Christian’s ongoing investment in technology and its students. “Someone could build a usable app while they are in high school! It’s especially important if they are interested in computer science, since they could go into college with a basis of code and databases,” Dukes said.
