Delaware Poetry Review issue guest edited by Dr. Jeffrey Lamar Coleman

Includes some of the most exciting poets from the Mid-Atlantic Region
May 21, 2013

The newest publication of Delaware Poetry Review ranges widely, from the author of 28 books to the first publication by a recent high school graduate. Encompassing some of the most exciting writers from the Mid-Atlantic Region, the spring 2013 issue is notable for its diversity.

Featured authors include Nikki Giovanni, a finalist for the National Book Award; Truth Thomas, a past writer-in-residence for HoCoPoLitSo; Karen Leona Anderson, assistant professor of English at St. Mary’s College of Maryland; Brian Gilmore, renowned columnist for the Progressive Media Project; and Laurie Kutchins, director of creative writing at James Madison University. The issue includes a generous selection of poems by 12 authors in total.

Guest editor Dr. Jeffrey Lamar Coleman writes in his introduction: “Poetry in the Delmarva region continues to blossom, and it has been my privilege to gather some of the area's most eclectic voices for this issue of Delaware Poetry Review. My goal was to locate gifted individuals who represent a range of experiences, from well-known and established writers to talented, emerging poets who have the potential to fill our lives with beautifully expressive lines and stanzas for years to come.“

“All of the writers gathered here, as their poems make clear,” Coleman continues, “are dedicated to their craft and deserving of increased attention. I hope this issue finds the eyes and ears of poetry lovers not only in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, but of those in other parts of the country and beyond."

Coleman, a professor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, is the editor of the landmark anthology released last year, "Words of Protest, Words of Freedom: Poetry of the American Civil Rights Movement and Era."  In addition to his talent as an editor and his clear critical eye, Coleman is a poet of precise and delicate sensibilities, and the author of "Spirits Distilled: Poems."  He also serves as poetry editor of the new magazine, The Journal of Hip Hop Studies.
