Delaware PRIDE@Work advances workplace equality
United Way of Delaware’s PRIDE Council announces the formation of a new committee, Delaware PRIDE@Work, led by Theresa Andrews of Bank of America, Delaware PRIDE@Work co-chair; Kirsten Mucha of DuPont Corporate Communications, Delaware PRIDE@Work co-chair; and Bob Martz, United Way of Delaware PRIDE council leader. The committee is bolstered by 13 employers that currently have LGBT groups.
Delaware PRIDE@Work is a formal network of LGBTQ employee resource groups and/or diversity leaders that represent companies with the largest employee presence in the state of Delaware. While Delaware is a state that has laws and policies that prohibit workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, there can be issues that affect a person’s acceptance and inclusion in the workplace.
“The committee’s aim is to advance workplace equality among top employers in Delaware, making these companies places where LGBTQ individuals feel safe to bring their full self to work, which benefits the individual, their coworkers and, ultimately, their employer,” Andrews said.
“Companies that embrace equality are not only desirable places to work for individuals within the LGBTQ community, but for younger employees, in general, who are increasingly shown to value equality and inclusion in the workplace,” Mucha said. “This keeps Delaware employers competitive when recruiting and retaining unique and diverse talent, which benefits the state.”
Delaware PRIDE@Work partners with the United Way of Delaware PRIDE Council to further the council’s mission to leverage the community's resources, including corporate, education, health, government and religious organizations, to improve the lives of LGBTQ youth and adults in the state.
Their objectives for 2014 include an increase in membership to include LGBTQ ERG and/or diversity leaders from top companies in the state, making an impact in the community through United Way affiliated activities that support LGBTQ youth and adults and to create a community to share best practices in equality and inclusion to advance workplace equality in the state.
United Way of Delaware’s mission is to maximize the community’s resources to improve the quality of life for all Delawareans. For more information, to make a contribution, to advocate or volunteer, go to www.uwde.org or call 302-573-3731.
