Delaware Seashore State Park offers new programs for children and families through Aug. 15
Delaware Seashore State Park is offering five new programs for children and families to explore history and nature all summer long. For programs which require preregistration, call 302-227-6991.
On Tuesdays at 10 a.m., children can discover the amazing history of the United States Life-Saving Service during the program Surfman Superheroes. At the turn of the century, surfmen were considered heroes of their time, risking everything to go out in the harshest winter storms, rescuing stranded sailors from sinking ships. Children will use stories, tales and hands-on games to explore how the heroes of yesterday relate to the heroes of today. This program is for children age 4 and older. Admission is $4 per child. Parents must stay but will not be charged admission. Preregistration is required.
On Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m., the public is invited to get muddy with the new program Marsh Walk. The salt marshes of Delaware’s Inland Bays provide habitat for some of the area’s most important species. Participants will explore these creatures and their home up close while they learn about their importance to the Inland ays. This program is geared towards all ages, and admission is $4 per person. Preregistration is required.
Jelly, Jelly, Jellyfish, held at 10 a.m., Thursdays, allows visitors to take a break from the heat with an inside program that helps children understand what jellyfish are and why they are important to Delaware’s ecosystems. Participants will see real, living jellyfish, discover the “magic” of bioluminescence and beat the heat with a cool craft. This program is for children age 3 and older. Admission is $4 per child. Parents must stay but will not be charged admission. Preregistration is recommended.
Delaware’s Inland Bays are teeming with life, including the delicious Northern Quahog Clam. At 1:30 p.m., Thursdays, participants in Clamming 101 will learn how to search for clams and practice catching and releasing them with the help of park naturalists. This program is for children ages 8 and older. Admission is $6 per participant. Preregistration is required.
Take a walk on one of Delaware Seashore’s most popular trails and search for hidden locations in Geocaching at Fresh Pond, held at 1:30 p.m., Fridays. Program participants will compete against each other to locate caches hidden along the trail that contain clues to a final secret location. Participants are urged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle. This program is geared toward all ages, and admission is $6 per participant. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Preregistration is required.
