Delmarva Christian HS juniors participate in State Youth in Government Day
Four Delmarva Christian High School juniors joined 52 other students to participate in Youth In Government Day in Georgetown April 18. The DCHS representatives included Erica Apgar, Andrew Keck, Hamilton Schlabach and Jayne Stevens.
Sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, County Day, as it is also known, provides students the opportunity to study county government processes, guiding young people toward an understanding, comprehension and appreciation of their roles as United States citizens.
The day consisted of a mock county council session where students took on the roles of officers, district representatives, and private citizen observers who presented and debated issues typically brought to the council.
"This was a good opportunity to see how government works on a small scale," said DCHS junior Andrew Keck. "I came to realize that the county council is the first level of government where appeals are made by the people."
Youth in Government Day is one of the activities provided through the Boys State and Girls State leadership and citizenship programs. In June, Erica, Andrew, Hamilton and Jayne will participate in the statewide one-week program that will include legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating, voting and special instruction in parliamentary procedure.
