One hundred and sixty-seven cats ignored a three-dog night that rained its tail off and showed up for the 31st running of the Dam Mill 5K Aug. 2 in Millsboro. "During race setup in total darkness it rained so hard there was no way we could use flour to put arrows on the road," said race director Tim Bamforth. But the town's fire department and police and lots of volunteers do a great job helping with this race. And by race start it had stopped raining and conditions were perfect.

Enos Benbow, always cool like a summer rain, won in 16:59, chased to the finish by Sonny Boy Landis in 17 flat. Rounding out the top five runners were Steven Eshelman, 17:40; Logan Dunn, 17:42; and Peter Wagner, 17:54.

Debbie Connor, 44, from Dunbar, Pa., was the first woman to finish in 20:43, followed by Heather Marrow in 21:44, Mardiny Ung in 22:06, Jenn Trojan in 22:14, Emma Barthelmess in 22:28, and Susan Dunn in 22:51.

Gary Fisher was the Clydesdale champion in 22:39, while Laura Marvin won the Filly race in 26:56.

Fast young runners in the race included age 9 and under female winner Lainey Shockro, 24:04, followed by Katie Kuhlman, 25:19. Luke Burton continued his fast summer running, winning 9 and under in 23:06 followed by Joseph Best, just 7, who ran 34:49.

The age 10-13 female top three were Emma Barthelmess, 22:28; Samantha Jacona, 26:30; and Davina Graybill, 28:36.

John Best, 13, captured the 10-13 title in 22:21.

Jack Vassalotti, disguised as himself, won the 60-64 age group in 26:36.

Jack Noel, 75, took the 75-79 title in 29:49.

John "Benjamin” Button of Lewes, 82, won his age group running a freakishly fast 31:58, a full 11 minutes better than the peloton of Ed Green 82, 42:16; Jimbo Lyons, 80, 44:13; and Alberto Castillo, 82, 47:47.

The Race for Paws 5K at The Starboard in Dewey Beach takes off at 8 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9.
