Dewey Beach — Police in Dewey Beach have arrested a Sussex County native who they say has been adorning the town with cartoon characters.

Dewey Beach Police Sgt. Cliff Dempsey said a seasonal officer saw a man tagging a utility pole near Dickinson Avenue, July 28. Police arrested Orion Cameron, 29, who attended Sussex Central High School and is now a resident of Oakland, Calif.

“When the officers were placing him in a patrol vehicle, a passerby notified the officers that they observed the same individual placing graffiti on a nearby ATM machine,” Dempsey said.

Police say they found Cameron with a black paint marker in his possession. Dempsey said it took Cameron less than 10 seconds to create one drawing, and police believe he is responsible for 12 doodles throughout town.

Cameron was charged with one felony count of graffiti to real property with damage greater than $1,500, one count of possession of graffiti tools and six counts of criminal mischief.

Police took Cameron to Sussex Correctional Institution, where he was held in default of a $7,000 bond.

Dempsey said Cameron was the only active graffiti artist in town.  Other markings are left over from Senior Week, he said.
