Dewey should coordinate speed limits with DelDOT

By Robert Fischer | Feb 28, 2013

Regarding Dewey Beach Council’s desire to lower the Dewey Beach speed limit from its present 30 mph to 25 mph (Feb. 5, Cape Gazette, page 2), perhaps the council should re-review DELDOT’s plans for extensive road construction on Route 26 into Bethany Beach.

It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that traffic restrictions on Route 26 will obviously increase traffic on Route 1 between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach, i.e., directly through Dewey Beach. The need for traffic safety in Dewey Beach is important, but lowering the current speed limit in Dewey Beach will be a “pile-on” factor to the Route 26 construction, possibly  causing traffic to back up from Dewey into Rehoboth and Bethany from Friday until late Sunday nights during the summer season.

“The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.”  (Spock, Star Trek II, “The Wrath of Khan") . Two alternative approaches: build a 55 mph highway around Dewey Beach (expensive and unlikely), or increase the summer speed limit to 35 mph during construction blockages on Route 26.
