Thoughts From the Sidelines

Djokovic sets record with third win in Australian Open

Azarenka secures title for women
By Sumner Spence | Jan 31, 2013

The Australian Open tennis had two very interesting and deserving champions at the close of this year's tournament Jan. 27.  For the men, Novak Djokovic won for the third straight time, which is a record for this major. Roger Federer played well again but lost in the semifinals to Andy Murray. I do think that Roger will be playing for a long time to come, even though he is 31, which is pretty old for tennis. Rafael Nadal did not play as he has been out since July with knee problems.

On the women's side, Victoria Azarenka won. I was very happy for her because she should have won the U.S. Open. She blew that opportunity and gave that win to Serena Williams instead. In golf this past week, Tiger Woods secured a strong win by four shots in his 75th career PGA Tour tournament at Torrey Pines golf club in San Diego, Calif.. This was his eighth win there if you also count the U.S. Open in 2008. The next time he'll probably play will be in three weeks at the Accenture Match Play tournament in Arizona. Phil Mickelson also played the California event, but his efforts were disappointing. I will give my Super Bowl review next week and will also share which commercials made my list of favorites.
