Dogfish Head Poetry Prize to be presented Dec. 8

Dec 03, 2013

The annual Dogfish Head Poetry Prize will be presented Sunday, Dec. 8, at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. The event will take place in the upstairs dining room between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

This is the 11th year the prize has been awarded but the first year it has been given for a full-length collection of poetry. In the past, the award went to a chapbook-length manuscript. The winner’s name is traditionally kept secret until the date of the presentation.

Readings by last year’s winner, Tina Raye Dayton of Salisbury, Md., and prize-winning poet Gerry LaFemina of Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Md.,will take place before the presentation. This year’s winner will read from his or her manuscript, followed by a book signing. Light fare will be provided.

The prize consists of publication of the winning manuscript by Broadkill River Press, 10 copies of which go to the author, plus $500 and two cases of Dogfish Head craft brewed beer. The contest, originally open only to poets on the Delmarva Peninsula, was expanded this year to include not only Delaware, Maryland and Virginia but also North Carolina, West Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the District of Columbia. The prize will be awarded by Sam Calagione, founder and CEO of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Distillery, or by another company official.

The Dogfish Head Poetry Prize is sponsored by Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales and Dennis Forney of the Cape Gazette.
