Dogfish Head teams up with Habitat for Humanity for Day of Service April 8
For several years, Mariah and Sam Calagione, owners of Dogfish Head Brewery and Restaurant, have chosen Sussex County Habitat for Humanity as one of the main beneficiaries of their local philanthropy program. Building walls for future homes at both their Rehoboth Avenue restaurant location and in the parking lot of the Milton brewery, Dogfish has remain committed to serving with SCHFH to eliminate poverty housing.
Kevin Gilmore, executive director of Sussex County Habitat for Humanity, said, “Sam and Mariah and their coworkers have set an example and model for other local companies to imitate, coming together to not only have a team-building day of service, but truly making a difference in the lives of our future homeowners and partner families.”
Dogfish Head now has nearly 200 employees, which presented a challenge for SCHFH organizers. Community Engagement Director Tom Protack said, “Our entire SCHFH team embraced this challenge and worked hard to plan a day that would both fulfill the desire of our friends at Dogfish to serve and at the same time accelerate our building schedule so we could get our partner families into their homes faster. From our volunteer coordinators to our construction team, countless hours have been spent planning, and on Monday, April 8, I am happy to announce that after their Day of Service with SCHFH, Dogfish will frame, raise, and sheath three new Habitat homes. They will arrive at 9 a.m. and see block foundations and leave at 3 p.m. and see the walls of three homes up and ready for trusses!”
Dogfish teams will be split up between two homes in Georgetown Point (one of the homes is the Veteran Build project) and one home on King Road close to Seaford. The day begins with a rally at the brewery at 8 a.m. and concludes with a chili celebration at 4 p.m.. The event is closed to outside volunteers; however, if other companies or groups would like to sponsor a similar volunteer event, contact Habitat at www.sussexcountyhabitat.org.
