Don't badger and bully Milton's citizens

By Jeff Dailey | May 24, 2013

Dear Editors, your board Editorial appearing May 17, "Beer may be Milton's water solution . . ." might have demonstrated a better use of editorial space had this been the message: Drink responsibly, drive defensively and especially with the tourist season fast approaching.

And while water is in fact the universal solvent, no one has enough of it I fear to wash away your paper's misuse of ink in what seemed to be a badgering and bullying of Milton's citizens.

Responsible citizens of Milton voted down an over $4 million water referendum two years ago.  A right plan, one better addressing Milton's water system challenges, was then put before the public this spring.  Clearly, it caused many citizens to wince at the first referendum content and dollar amount - $4 million versus the now $1.75 million.  Congratulations, responsible citizens of Milton!

Those supporting this spring's referendum were probably wishing for the promise of principle forgiveness from the state.  Not a chance this go-round and the referendum was defeated.  Forgiveness might exist with a possible re-application this August.  Meanwhile, Milton makes improvements to the system, prepares for future work, and all with money currently in the water department's coffers - not borrowed!  Water conservation measures will be in place and especially during summer's peak water usage.  We can only hope such programs are in place throughout our First State!

Looks to me, Cape Gazette editorial team, like responsible citizens working with elected representatives committed to fiscal responsibility, good planning and smart growth to maintain the quality of life in our jewel of a town, is up for great applause from your esteemed newspaper and thank you for the recent on-target news articles.

As to your Jules Verne vision of pumping Dogfish Head Ales through the tap, I for one would like to bring you all back down to earth with an invitation to Milton's Tenth Annual Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival.

No 'pipe-dreaming' here!  What a way to celebrate Memorial Day weekend in the best little town in the universe!  Come one, come all; raise a glass of Dogfish Head brew to Milton, Delaware and all of America; to free speech and assembling peaceably, where even wayward editors can be forgiven, and do check out the town website for all the details.  And remember please, always imbibe responsibly.
