Don't blame woes on City of Rehoboth
In her Aug. 16 letter, Sandi Parker of Arlington, Va. expressed great concern about pedestrian safety on Route One. I sympathize with her. However, I must disabuse her of the notion that this has anything to do with the City of Rehoboth Beach.
If she had rented a cottage in the City of Rehoboth Beach, she would have found pedestrian safety and walkability. But, since she chose to rent over a mile outside of town in Sussex County, she’s on her own and needs to point her finger at the guilty parties.
Many people delude themselves that they live in Rehoboth Beach when in truth they live in Sussex County. When Rehoboth passes a scooter ordinance, everyone and his brother complains. I urge you to take that energy and fight back against the governmental body that encourages unrestrained growth and development with no corresponding infrastructure. Your government goes unchallenged.
Sussex County Council is happy when you complain about how the little town by the sea is run. It keeps the heat off them. And you have no voice.
I want to introduce you to your representative, County Councilman George Cole. How many have heard this name? He’s the guy who has represented you since 1986 and I would bet that you’ve never seen him or heard him speak. Never attended a meeting where he was present.
Start a movement against the shameful Sussex County Council. George Cole is up for re-election in 2014. He says he might run and then again he might not. Why don’t you call him at 302-539-6911 and ask him about his plans. Tell him about your concerns. I for one believe that a new candidate is needed.
I’m sorry Ms. Parker had the daylights scared out of her in Sussex County. But nothing’s going to change until we face the facts about Sussex County’s governing body and stop erroneously blaming it on the City of Rehoboth Beach.
