Hand-dipped donuts, sticky buns draw crowds from day one

When Cheryl and Stephanie Dorman decided to go into business together, they said it didn't take long to get into making donuts.

Once the women found their location, a unit across from Peddlers Village that formerly housed a donut shop, the mother and daughter-in-law revamped the place and before long, reopened as Dorman's Donuts. They haven't looked back.

From the first day she opened for business, Cheryl said the shop, which offers cookies, muffin tops, sticky buns and signature hand-dipped donuts cooked when they are ordered, has been filling a need in the area.

"Me and my granddaughter were working when we opened," she said. "We were packed, but we got through, one order at a time."

These days, Cheryl said, she even dreams about donuts: one of the house specialties, the salted caramel donut, which is dipped in caramel and topped with pretzel pieces, came to her one night when she was dozing off.

Baking seems to run in the family; Cheryl's mother was a professional baker and now three generations run the new business, she said. Sometimes, her mother even stops in to show the women how do do baking tricks, such as creating flowers with icing, Cheryl said.

Looking to continue making new and creative donuts, Cheryl said she recently dipped donuts in Girl Scout cookies, and they have their own modified versions of Boston cream and jelly-filled donuts at the store.

It's not just the donuts that are flying off the shelves. Stephanie said they sold more than 1,500 sticky buns in their first few weeks of business.

The business has been bustling from the start, largely because word seems to have gotten out in some circles, like the Cape Henlopen School District, where recent customer Pam Gallagher was tipped off about the donuts at work.

"I had in-service on Friday, and one of the guys was talking about it, so I figured I'd stop in this weekend," Gallagher said. "I got the salted caramel because I was told I had to do it!"

Dorman's Donuts is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call 302-827-1075 or visit the Facebook page by searching Dorman's Donuts.

Small business may be the salvation of our economy. Good luck, and best wishes.
