“How many ways can we beat ourselves? Let us count the ways.”

Buckle up your bonnets and let's rock the sonnet of all the ways to lose a football game.

Cape fell to 2-4 on a soggy Saturday afternoon, Oct. 12, against a Dover team that didn’t need any help scoring points. The Senators improved to 5-1.

Cape was trailing 12-7 thanks to a five-yard return of a fumble by Thomas Ott, Dover blocked a punt and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown, then a pass into the flat was picked off by Marcellus Pack and returned 43 yards for another 6 points as the Vikings trailed 27-7 at halftime.

The worst news was Dover was running over Cape’s defense like stormwater over Prime Hook Road.

Pack ran 56 yards untouched on the second play of the game for a touchdown. The Senators came back with a 75-yard drive as Raekwon Bouges scored from a yard out.

Cape’s first-half totals in their four losses total 127-28.

‘We [coaching staff] came in here three years ago and got this thing going in the right direction with steady improvement [records of 5-5, 7-3, 8-2]," coach Bill Collick said. “We had a great preseason, and no one saw this coming. We have enough injured players to have a pretty good team, but nonetheless we haven’t looked very good. “

Dover continued to dominate in the second half as two more Cape starters joined the list of sideline casualties. Dover dominated, keeping the ball on the ground and rushing for more than 400 yards in the game.

Marcellus Pack, 180 yards and two touchdowns, and Raekwon Bouges, 142 yards and three touchdowns, ran roughshod over and around the Cape defense all day.

“We have four games left to play, beginning at Polytech on Friday night," Collick said. “We are evaluating players and coaches to see what we have to do to fix this thing.”

Polytech is 4-1 and is scheduled to host Milford on a rare Monday night homecoming game before hosting Cape Friday, Oct. 18.
