Dr. James Zabora, a national leader in the psychosocial care of cancer patients and their families, to speak at the Cancer Survivorship Conference on January 16, 2014, in Rehoboth Beach.
James Zabora, PhD, Director Life with Cancer at Inova Health System in Northern Virginia, will be among the speakers at a conference for cancer survivors and healthcare professionals on Thursday, January 16, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
“After Ringing the Bell: A Cancer Survivorship Conference,” is offered at no cost but attendees must register by January 10, 2014, by calling Jo Allegro-Smith at (302) 645-9150, or by emailing her at email@example.com. The Sussex County Survivorship Coalition is hosting the conference.
The conference, which took place for the first time in January 2013, focuses on the survivor’s transition from patient to survivor. Attendees will be presented with information on how to identify post treatment emotional concerns as they integrate mind-body medicine into cancer survivorship care.
Health professionals will be able to earn continuing education units.
Dr. Zabora is known for his focus on bringing a holistic and comprehensive approach to cancer care. At Inova, he is responsible for all psychological care for cancer patients and their families at Inova’s five hospitals, including its Children’s Hospital, and overseeing the myriad of mind and body wellness therapies offered by the organization.
Prior to joining the Life with Cancer team, he was dean and professor of social work at the Catholic University of America’s National Catholic School of Social Service (NCSSS). Dr. Zabora earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Loyola College in Maryland, and received his Ph.D. in social sciences from Johns Hopkins University. He has been honored with numerous awards for his work in the social service field from organizations such as the American Psychosocial Oncology Society, the Society for Social Work Leadership, and the University of Maryland, as well as induction into the National Association of Social Workers’ Social Work Pioneers Program.
Rehoboth Beach registered dietician and certified personal trainer Lisa Harkins RD, LDN, will be leading an informative workshop about the importance of healthy eating and living well. Lisa owns Ideal Nutrition and Fitness LLC.
Mixed media and collage artist Cynthia Thomasset, MA, also will speak. She is a studio artist at Goggleworks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA, and will talk about the relationship between creativity and healing.
Clare Wilson, RN, MS, the Cancer Care Coordinator at Beebe Healthcare’s Tunnell Cancer Center, will close the conference with a brief meditation session. Clare is a certified well coach, and has worked with cancer patients for more than 25 years.
In addition to the workshops, vendors will also have exhibits set up and will be providing a variety of health and wellness information and resources. A continental breakfast and a lunch will be provided at the conference.
The Sussex County Survivorship Coalition was formed in July 2011 to coordinate the efforts of the variety of local organizations that traditionally have reached out to cancer survivors.
