Veteran physician Dr. Paul Howard has returned to Lewes.

The ear, nose and throat doctor practiced in Lewes for 20 years before moving his practice to Milton. Over the last year, Howard searched for a new location closer to his Lewes patients.

He found a space on Route 1, just north of Surf Bagel and opened ReNuMe in May.

"We chose the name because here we want to help people change their perception of themselves," Howard said. "We want them to feel better about themselves."

Howard's philosophy is if his patients look good, then they feel better. He said many of his patients are interested in skin resurfacing, noninvasive plastic surgery and body contouring.

Howard, a graduate of the University of Texas health center in San Antonio, moved back to Lewes in 1987 to be near family. He started a practice the same year, seeing patients from children to senior citizens.

Howard said ear, nose and throat specialists also receive training in plastic surgery. In the late 1980s there wasn't much interest in plastic surgery procedures because they were so invasive, Howard said, but today more residents are interested in skin and body improvements.

He has taken classes to learn the newest technology including the Venus Freeze machine, which he now offers at his practice. Howard uses a wand, similar to an ultrasound machine to apply heat to a patient's skin. The heat, which some compare to a hot stone massage, destroys fat cells while encouraging new growth of collagen. Howard said the treatment tightens skin and rids the body of fat and cellulite in just a few sessions.

Howard also treats patients for problem acne, chronic sinus problems, sleep apnea, hearing concerns and balance issues.

"I have patients who say they don't go to church anymore or they won't go out to eat anymore, because they can't hear," said Howard, who offers surgery options or refers patients to other specialists in the area. "Part of improving people's lives is having them hear their best, and patients have been really satisfied."

About one-third of Howard's patients are children who have chronic ear infections or tonsillitis. In serious cases, Howard performs surgery to implant ear tubes or remove tonsils.

"The best part of the tonsil surgery is that once it's over, the problem is cured," Howard said.

When Howard was a young man in Ocean View, he often watched his grandfather, who was an eye, ear, nose and throat doctor.

"He always seemed to love his work," said Howard, whose father was also a physician.

The Lewes resident has children and grandchildren in the Cape Region and is engaged to be married.

ReNuMe accepts most forms of insurance and does not require a referral, although Howard said insurance carriers may require a referral. The practice is accepting new patients.

ReNuMe is at 17316 Route 1, Lewes. The office is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information or to make an appointment, call 302-644-2232.
