Elizabeth 'Betty' Carter, involved in Lewes community
Elizabeth (Betty, "Cartie") Wright Carter of Lewes passed away Friday, Sept. 13, at Beebe Medical Center.
She was born in New York City, N.Y., Feb. 11, 1918, daughter of the late Charles Lennox and Elizabeth Steen Wright. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank Saulsbury Carter Jr., in 2002; and her three sisters, Charlotte Arnold, Catherine Uhl and Louise Sumrell.
Betty grew up in Bayside, N.Y. and attended the Katherine Gibbs School in New York City. She was a member of the Lewes Historical Society for 51 years, served as a docent at the Burton-Ingram house for many years, and was co-chair of the Christmas House Tour for about 20 years.
For 57 years she was a member of the Sussex Gardeners and received numerous prizes for her flower arrangements. She volunteered at the Children's Beach House, was a member of the First Town Club of Lewes, a life member of the Lewes Yacht Club and a member of the Colonel David Hall Chapter of the D.A.R. for 61 years.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Holly Carter Clark and her husband Paul of Maple Glen, Pa.; and her son, Frank (Nick) Saulsbury Carter III and his wife Laura (Laurie) of Lewes; her five grandchildren, Peter Clark, Heather (Bill) Allred, Meredith (Mike) Zinkand, Frank Carter IV, and Anne Carter; and five great-grandchildren, Will and Kelly Allred, Molly, Charlotte and Lyla Zinkand.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Second Street, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
Family and friends may also visit Sunday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Lewes Historical Society, 110 Shipcarpenter St., Lewes, DE 19958; the Lewes Yacht Club Foundation, PO Box 2, Lewes, DE 19958; or a charity of your choice.
