Episcopal women award memorial scholarships to area seniors

Jun 01, 2014

Sarah Bell, Sussex Tech High School, and Kylee Manganiello, Cape Henlopen High School, are both 18 years old, graduating high school seniors soon on their way to college, now with another common achievement.

Both of them have been awarded memorial scholarships from the Episcopal Church Women of St. George’s Episcopal Chapel in Angola. The women of the church do this on behalf of ECW deceased members who served the needs of others and inspired today’s ECW members and others with their dedication.

Both young women are planning careers in elementary education. They have already had a taste of teaching in their lives. Manganiello said, “For as long as I can remember, I have been teaching.” She helped her mother with a preschool and also helped her dad teach gymnastics.

Both won numerous awards during their high school years. Bell donated more than 380 hours in community service.

An ECW committee of women from St. George’s Chapel has worked tirelessly on shaping this scholarship award. They are led by Dr. Joyanne Murphy, who is retired but now teaches part-time at Delaware State University and is active in the ECW group with much experience in developing scholarship awards. St. George’s Chapel ECW President Helen Abrams and Murphy have plans to continue the growth of the new award and increase the amount of the funding in years to come. Each young woman received $750 this year.

For more information or to contribute to the scholarship fund, call Cathy Graden at 302-227-9153 and/or send checks, made out to SG ECW Scholarship Fund, to 18 Olive Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. St. George’s Chapel in Angola and All Saints’ Church in Rehoboth Beach share a common parish ministry, with an office in Rehoboth Beach.
