Fiction-writing classes start April 1 at Rehoboth Beach Writers' Guild

Mar 19, 2014

Registration has begun for three fiction-writing classes offered by the Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild, with participants being admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Starting Tuesday, April 1, the guild will offer a six-week writing workshop, Fear of Fiction. This class is for those who want to write fiction, but think they can’t or those who have written bits and pieces of stories but stopped short of finishing.

The class, which runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., April 1, 8, 22, 29 and May 6, 13 (no class  April 15) will be held in the Rehoboth Beach Library and is divided into two parts. For the first three weeks, participants will focus on exercises that will help them move from writing true stories, memoir, to writing short fiction. During the last three weeks of the class, participants will each focus on writing one short story using the techniques they have studied.

The class, which costs $240 for RBWG members and $270 for nonmembers, will be taught by short story writer Sarah Barnett, the winner of the inaugural Beach Reads Short Story contest. Check out Barnett’s writer’s page at www.rehobothbeachwritersguild.com.

The second fiction class being offered is Novel Explorations II, a class for those who have begun a novel but got bogged down, or for those who have a solid idea for a novel, or a solid idea of a character they’d love to work with, but have only written bits and pieces. Students don’t have to have taken Novel Explorations I.  The class will offer exercises that focus on crucial elements of fiction writing - dialogue, dramatic scenes, pacing, point of view, and setting.

Taught by novelist Maribeth Fischer, the class will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Fridays, April 4 to May 23. The location is a private residence in Lewes. Directions will be available upon registration. The cost is $320 for RBWG members and $360 for nonmembers.

The third class is Microfiction, an online class taught by published short story writer and poet Ethan Joella. This class offers participants a chance to write their own highly charged, compressed short stories that stay under four pages. Works of flash fiction are in high demand for literary journals. During this six-week personal tutorial, participants will receive five specific assignments that result in their writing five pieces of microfiction to be submitted for feedback.

Participants will work on a traditional short-short story, an experimental micro piece, a prose poem, a short monologue, and an epistolary piece. During the final week, they will put the previous works through a substantial revision process. The class runs from March 30 to May 4 and costs $240 for RBWG members and $270 for nonmembers.
