Fiction writing workshop for beginners starts Feb. 20

Jan 30, 2014

The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild will offer a six-week writing workshop, Fear of Fiction, starting Thursday, Feb. 20. This class is for those who want to write fiction, but think they can’t or those who have written bits and pieces of stories but stopped short of finishing because they didn’t know what should happen next.

The class, which runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20, 27, March 6, 20, 27 and April 3, will be held in the Lewes Public Library and is divided into two parts. For the first three weeks, participants will focus on exercises that will help them move from writing true stories (memoir) to writing short fiction.

Participants will read and study several short stories by well-regarded authors to discover and try to emulate some of the techniques of fiction including point of view, setting, and dialogue. During the last three weeks of the class, participants will focus on writing one short story using the techniques they have studied.

The class, which costs $240 for RBWG members and $270 for non-RBWG members, will be taught by short story writer Sarah Barnett, the winner of the inaugural Beach Reads short story contest. Check out her writer’s page at www.rehobothbeachwritersguild.com. An excerpt of Barnett’s story, “The Summer of Your Discontent,” will be published in the May issue of Delaware Beach Life.
