Five Lewes firefighters were given probation before judgment for throwing watermelons at mailboxes in Worcester County, Md.

Stewart William Pryor, 28, of Millsboro; Dylan Lee Sharp, 19, of Milton; Franklin Adam Martin, 23, of Milton; Sean James Magee, 23, of Selbyville; and Addison Hill-Bittner, 22, of Rehoboth Beach each pleaded guilty to one count of malicious destruction of property valued at less than $500.

At 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 4, the Worcester County Sherriff's was notified that several people in a dark pick-up truck were damaging mailboxes. A Maryland State Trooper stopped the truck and found four of the men in the bed of the truck with 29 watermelons.

At the time of their arrest, the group admitted they damaged 14 mailboxes, a Waste Management trash can and a church parsonage sign.

The five firefighters originally faced 16 charges for destroying property valued at less than $500 and one count of destroying property valued at more than $500. All the remaining charges were dropped. The firefighters were given probation and ordered to pay $300 in fines.

Fire Chief Troy Virden said the firefighters have been disciplined internally and that the issue has been put to rest. He said the firefighters are not currently on active duty, and he declined to comment further on what disciplinary measures were taken.
