Fitness Friday: Get down on the town

What a better way to cap off a week of hurricane problems, then to get out of the house with the family?

Venture out this weekend and see some old friends, make some new friends or just enjoy what your area has to offer.

Visit the playground, the local pizzeria or just some friends down the street - it's time to lap up this weather before the cold sends us all scurrying for our footed pajamas!

Here are some fun ways to enjoy your town, and get a work-out at the same time!

• Mix socializing with exercising. Do you normally spend time with your family or friends by going to dinner, watching sports on TV or going to movies? Make your social time more active by planning events that get all of you moving. Go for a family hike, play a game of tag football, or make a date with your significant other or best friend on the treadmill. There are many options for squeezing more activity into your social calendar.

• Turn chores into exercise. While cleaning might not be the most fun activity, it's something we all have to do, and it can definitely be a workout if you want it to be. Set a kitchen timer for 20 minutes and see how much of the house you can clean. Throw in some lunges or push-ups and feel the burn!

• Scavenger hunts are a great way to explore new areas. Challenge your kids to find something yellow, a business card or a restaurant menu featuring artichoke hearts. It could be anything and it will keep them entertained while walking around town.

• Instead of spending time looking for the parking spot closest to the restaurant, find an easy spot that's a bit farther away. Then enjoy the walk and the exercise while heading to dinner. And, after dinner, the walk will help burn off some of those calories!

Of course, remember to be safe while out on the town. Keep your kids within eye-sight and ear-shot. It only takes a minute for tragedy to strike. Always be alert to your surroundings and the other people around you.

Have a great weekend - see you Monday!
