Former Rehoboth planner clarifies land use

By Mary Campbell | Aug 01, 2014

August 9 is important to all the voters in Rehoboth Beach. We will be electing a mayor and two commissioners. Unfortunately in the heat of trying to get people to vote for you, misinformation is stated as fact.

As former chairman of the Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission, all of you need to know that members of the planning board during the time we were writing our first land use plan it was important to emphasize the importance of Rehoboth's commercial district and how to ensure its ongoing vitality. The success in other towns of the organization Main Street came to our attention.

We determined the Main Street concept should become a part of making sure our commercial endeavors and business owners would have a firm base from which to plan and move forward. The Main Street concept was a major recommendation in the section of the land use plan devoted to the commercial district.

The Rehoboth Beach Commissioners also recognized the importance and on 1998 voted to initiate the Rehoboth Beach Main Street with the positive follow-through of funds. A director was hired and we benefit today from a volunteer citizen planning board and board of commissioners willing to invest in the future. The result, a vital Main Street working with and for the Rehoboth Beach business community.

Mary Campbell
Chairman 1991-2004
