Four Sussex Tech health students win national HOSA medals

Four Sussex Technical High School students placed in the top 10 in their events at the Health Occupations Students of America Nationals in Nashville, Tenn. June 25-30.

2013 graduate Christopher Clifton competed against more than 80 high school students and placed first in the category of Job Seeking Skills. This was Sussex Tech's first gold medalist at HOSA Nationals. Teachers Maj. Ben Jester, Sgt. First Class Luis Melendez, Carolyn Maull and Kristen Wright equipped and guided Christopher the past four years.

Incoming senior Bansri Patel competed against 83 other high school students from across the nation in Medical Terminology and placed fifth in the category. Instructors Carolyn Maull, Kristen Wright, Nancy Massaro, Margie Booth and Crystal Thawley prepared Bansri in the complex world of medical root words, terminology and anatomy.

Incoming juniors Hiten Patel and Thomas "T.J." Pinto, along with 84 other high school students competed in the category of Dental Science. Both students successfully made it past round one, the written test, to move on to round two, the skills/practicum portion. Only the top 36 high school students in this division moved on to round two. Both students were taken off-site to Remington College for round two and returned expressing the extreme level of difficulty in this round. However, T.J. Pinto earned sixth place, and Hiten earned seventh place in Dental Science. Teacher Jill Lord worked to ensure both students were prepared.

Other students who participated in the HOSA Nationals were Henson Destine, Job Seeking Skills; Elyse Rubino, Community Awareness; Chelsea LeCates, Medical Terminology; Rachel Mayhorn and Lindsay Hetrick, CPR/First Aid; Hailey Amendt, Health Education; Yazmin Rodriguez-Chino, Community Awareness; Krystie Collins, Dental Science; Megan Parkhurst, Health Education; Zoe Callaway, Community Awareness; Caitlin Cook, Physical Therapy; and Yessica Rodriguez-Chino, Community Awareness.
