Frederica man dies in Route 1 accident

Jan 29, 2014

A 32-year-old Frederica man died Jan. 28 after colliding with a disabled chicken truck on Route 1 north of Milford.

Jeffrey L. Akins, 56, of Harrington was driving a tractor-trailer loaded with chickens westbound on New Wharf Road at 8:30 p.m. when he tried to cross the northbound lanes of Route 1, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

After the driver stopped at the intersection and accelerated across Route 1, Fournier said, the emergency air line supply to the trailer malfunctioned, causing the trailer wheels to lock.

The tractor-trailer stopped on the roadway, blocking the northbound lanes of Route 1 while Akins tried to pull the disabled trailer off the roadway, Fournier said.

A 2000 Honda CRX driven by Jason D. Johnson, 32, of Frederica, traveling north on Route 1 struck the trailer between the left rear tandem wheels, Fournier said.

The impact forced the Honda under the trailer, damaging the car. Johnson was properly restrained, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson's 9-year-old stepdaughter was properly restrained in the right rear seat. She was taken to Milford Memorial Hospital and transferred to A.I. DuPont Hospital where she is in serious but stable condition, Fournier said.

Akins was properly restrained and uninjured from the collision.

Route 1 at New Wharf Road was closed for about three hours.
