Fun, food, friends and fireworks at Ivy
Ivy restaurant and nightclub co-owner John Snow loves Dewey Beach.
It used to rankle him a bit when it became a 3-hour ghost town during the Rehoboth Beach Fourth of July fireworks display. So he grabbed the Highway One LP gold credit card – or maybe one of those cool black ones with the microchip – and approached his friends (and international pyrotechnicians) the Zambellis.

“Let’s give Dewey Beach the same fireworks display as Rehoboth Beach,” he mused, “but we’ll do it all in just 15 minutes. It’ll be big, bright, noisy and fun!” (In fact, not all that different from his beloved Ivy.)

Highway One LP executive chef Pete McMahon and Ivy head chef Casie Hayes have crafted a selection of 2-3 bite entrees ranging from $1.50 to about $3. So many different tastes, cleverly presented in sort of a bento-box style. You take a few bites, sip your martini, nibble some more, sip some more, order something again that you liked on the last round, and repeat as needed. Got a crowd? Order The Grand Poobah – one of each – for around $50. It’s worth every penny.

As the sun slowly set behind the gazebo, we enjoyed the Teriyaki Glazed Pork Shanks (possibly the star of the show), the Kobe Beef Sliders, the Beef Short Ribs, the double crunchy Grilled Grilled Cheese, the Thai Crusted Sea Scallops … I don’t have room to list them all.
The soft, breezy nightfall at the edge of the bay, punctuated by endless sips, tiny bites and Ivy’s inspired DJ suddenly clicked into “perfect” when the fireworks erupted over the water.
The crowds at Ivy and next-door neighbor Northbeach applauded, ooh’d and ahh’d as the sky overflowed with color. If I ever get to wondering why I moved here to the beach, I will remember July 4th, 2013 at Ivy.
