Fund for Women mixes fashion and philanthropy at annual show
Founders of the Fund for Women showed they could Sparkle and Shine and Get the Job Done at their fourth annual fashion show held April 13 at the Independence Hall Club House in Millsboro.
Other categories for the show included founders of the nonprofit showing what to wear for a Girls Night Out and for Fun in the Sun. More than 175 women and men attended this annual event aimed at helping the overall mission of the Fund for Women, to provide funding to enhance the worth and potential of women and girls in Delaware by bringing together the collective philanthropy of women.
Fashions were showcased from Azura, Josephine’s Daughter and Simply Dressed in Rehoboth; Candlelight Bridal in Millsboro; CraZy LadyZ in Ocean View; Deanna’s and Twila Farrell in Lewes; Lady Fenwick in Fenwick Island and Coolspring Cottage in Milford. Hair and makeup styling for the models was provided by Bad Hair Day and Bling Salon & Spa.
Also showcased were the good works a grant from the Fund for Women has provided at the Food Bank in Milford. The grant there helps women learn healthy and economic ways to prepare meals.
Created in 1993, the Fund for Women set an original goal to obtain 1,000 Founders, each contributing $1,000 to create a $1 million lasting endowment. More than 1,300 men and women have become Founders, and because of their generosity, the endowment now exceeds $3.1 million, due in part to the fundraising efforts of the Swingin’ With a Star Golf Tournament, honoring its own Betsy Rawls.
In May 2014, 17 nonprofit organizations will receive a total of $165,000 in grant awards.
As a result of the fashion show event, five women - Wendy Biggs, Jan McCarty, Antoinette Johnson, Margie Beacham and Ann Frasier - were so moved by the mission and works of the fund, they made the decision to become Founders.
