George 'Burt' White, retired mechanic
George "Burt" White of Rehoboth Beach passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes. He was born Wednesday, Aug. 22, 1934, in Newport News, Va., son of the late Herman and Dorothy (Burt) White.
Burt proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged, he embarked on a welding career with Sun Ship & Dry Dock in Chester, Pa., a skill he mastered while serving with the military.
In 1992 Burt and his wife, Joan would relocate to Sussex County where Burt would embark on a second career. He enjoyed a 22-year career as a maintenance mechanic with Beebe HealthCare in Lewes. Whenever time would permit, Burt would spend some leisurely time cruising, fishing, boating and crabbing on local waters. He could often be found hanging out at the American Legion, Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge. Most of all, he enjoyed his annual trip to his family farm in Merry Hill, N.C. for week-long hunting excursions.
Burt also loved to eat a good home-cooked meal. His preference was always meat and potatoes as he saw no need in anything else being served. He was the jokester amongst his family and friends, always referring to everyone as "Moe" whether he knew you for many years or just met you. Burt's fun-loving attitude and upbeat personality will be missed by many. There was nothing he enjoyed more in life than being surrounded by his many friends and family.
In addition to his parents, Burt was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Joan, who passed away in 2012. He was also preceded by a sister, Sandra Donald; and a grandson, Michael April. He is survived by four sons: William April and wife Carleen of Aston, Pa., Burt White and wife Eva of New Jersey, John April and wife Cookie of Crum Lynne, Pa. and Vincent White of New Jersey; three daughters, Jackie Dougherty and husband Barry of Brookhaven, Pa., Natalie Sellers and husband Lionel of West Grove, Pa. and Jennifer April Matich and husband Michael of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada; one brother: Herman Speight White and wife Lila of Zephyrhills, Fla.; three sisters: Beverly Carpenter of Rehoboth Beach, Hermie McCrae of St. Cloud, Fla. and Alice DiBianco and husband Joe of Boothwyn, Pa.; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 10, at 3 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will be private.
