Georgetown man arrested for seventh DUI

Aug 11, 2013
Darren M. McGrath

The Delaware State Police have arrested a Georgetown man after he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol for the seventh time.

The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, as a trooper on routine patrol observed a red Dodge Dakota southbound in the left-turn lane of North DuPont Boulevard proceed through a red light and turn onto North Bedford Street. The trooper, who was already traveling in the southbound lanes of Route 113, was able to perform a traffic stop on the pickup truck within a quarter of a mile of observing the infraction.  As the trooper made contact with the operator, who was later identified as Darren M. McGrath, 59, of Georgetown, a strong odor of alcohol was detected and a DUI investigation ensued.

McGrath was taken back to Troop 4 in Georgetown where he was arrested for his seventh DUI.  A computer check revealed he had six previous DUI convictions in 2009, 2008, 2007, 2004 and two in 1998; this arrest would make seven.

Along with the DUI offense, McGrath was also charged with driving while suspended and revoked, and failure to stop at a red light.  He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $10,600 cash bond after being arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3.
