Get a Taste of Rehoboth at first-ever event

As the heat of summer begins to subside, Rehoboth Inspired Chefs Initiative chefs have pulled one more trick out of their toques.

Since sampling innovative cuisine in Rehoboth on vacation might leave little time for other diversions such as, say, the beach, RICI organized Taste of Rehoboth on Thursday, Aug. 22, bringing nearly 20 local eateries, breweries and restaurants together under one roof in a culinary celebration.

Blue Moon Executive Chef Lion Gardner said this event will provide an opportunity to savor the highlights of downtown Rehoboth's culinary culture.

"People here for a few days won't be able to go to 15 different restaurants," Gardner said. "But you will be able to go to all of them in just a few hours at the convention center."

Gardner said Blue Moon will offer seared scallops with local corn and peaches to be paired with creative cocktails, wine and beer.

Jay Caputo, owner of Espuma and Cabo Modern Mexican Tequila Bar, said he's planning to bring braised halibut cheek with local squash, red pepper gel and basil from Espuma for the event.

At a(MUSE) chef Hari Cameron is planning to prepare a chilled corn soup with produce from T.S. Smith and Son's Orchard in Bridgeville.

"This is just the first event," Cameron said. "In the future we hope to do bigger outdoor festivals.

Also responsible for lining up live entertainment, Cameron said Paul Cullen and The Dug are on the books for Taste of Rehoboth.

The RICI is also hosting a live auction as part if the event to raise money for the Food Bank of Delaware, the beneficiary of proceeds from Taste of Rehoboth and other fundraisers hosted by the Inspired Chefs.

Rather than devote a substantial portion of the three-hour event to an auction only a few big items will be up for bid, but Gardner expects them to go for big bucks.

One auction item will include a night on the town, including tickets to a still- evolving winter event and accommodations, though he expects the biggest auction item will be a Dogfish Head tour and afternoon with beer baron Sam Calagione.

In a collaborative effort between downtown retailers, restaurants and Rehoboth Beach Main Street, organizers hope those who attend will bring nonperishables for the convention center in support of the Food Bank.

Taste of Rehoboth is open to all ages. Tickets are currently available at a discounted price at Azura, a(MUSE), Eden, Espuma, Hobo's and Rehoboth Beach Main Street.
