Give the voters of Dewey a voice
Let me begin by saying that I greatly admire and respect the Dewey Beach Town Council for numerous reasons. Thanks to this council there here have been many impressive and lasting changes made to our town over the last two years -in character, image, ordinance changes for a better and secure future of Dewey, and much more.
With that said, I must now state that I wholeheartedly disagree with the recent autonomous majority vote of council to not allow a gross receipts tax to go to referendum. The current proposal is merely asking for a non-binding referendum on the subject. This would actually mean no more than allowing the property owners of Dewey, instead of only the businesses, to voice their opinions on the issue.
Since this is non-binding, there are no legal issues here, simply the rights of the people to have the voice they were promised by council during elections.
I plead with council to reconsider their position on this issue. Please let the people of Dewey Beach and not just the businesses be heard.
