Gordon L. Smith Jr., investment advisor
Gordon L. Smith Jr., 70, a Bear Trap Dunes resident in Ocean View, formerly of Baltimore, Md., chairman of the board, shareholder, owner and an investment advisor with Baltimore Capital Management in Baltimore City, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, six days after open heart surgery at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes.
He graduated from City College in 1963 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Maryland in 1966. Gordon was an avid Terp fan and supported all of UM sports teams; Terp's basketball was at the top of his list of favorites.
Gordon was hired directly from college by Alex Brown and Sons, thus beginning a lifelong career in the investment business. He was made a vice president in 1976 and a special partner in 1981.
In October 1994 Gordon and Alec partnered to form Baltimore Capital Management. As an investment advisor, Gordon was described as brilliant in the manner he handled his clients' needs and guided them to make good investment decisions. Though now living in Delaware, Gordon stayed connected to his work in Baltimore.
"Gordon was a fantastic trader; his humor was just as fantastic. We were partners for 25 years, I couldn't ask for a better person to work with. He always showed interest in everyone around him. His knowledge of world events and his understanding of world economics was spectacular," said Alec Graham, Gordon's partner at Baltimore Capital Management.
After a lifetime of ties to Maryland, Gordon and his wife Barbara moved to Delaware. Gordon's love of the ocean and golf made Bear Trap Dunes golf community a great place to live. He and Barbara were founding residents and members of the Freeman Ocean View Community. He held a resounding love for the sport of golf and his commitment to the spirit of the Bear Trap Community was unmeasurable.
Gordon was a steadfast Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan. He rarely missed a game when either of his teams was playing.
Both work partners and golf partners agreed that Gordon was "fun to be with and will be terribly missed."
