Gov. Jack Markell recently presented an official proclamation to Douglas Perkins, who has been employed with Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County for 48 years. Disabled due to an automobile accident in 1965, Perkins was referred later that year to Goodwill by the Delaware Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. He began by repairing bicycles and reupholstering furniture for Goodwill and has held a variety of positions within the organization. He is currently a donation attendant at Goodwill’s Lea Boulevard headquarters in Wilmington. Markell, who serves as the chairman of the National Governors Association, has selected his chairman’s initiative to focus on strategies for employing people with disabilities. For 90 years, Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County’s mission has been to improve the quality of life for individuals with barriers to self-sufficiency through the power of work. In 2012, Goodwill provided nearly 30,000 services to individuals throughout the region.
