Great times for Cape community

Feb 26, 2013

It was Ott’s seventh straight pin in as many matches during the Henlopen Conference and state meets over the past two weekends – and Ott is only a junior, planning to come back to lead a strong team next year.

Meanwhile, up the road at the gym in Smyrna, the Vikings boys’ basketball team was battling the favored Polytech Panthers for the DIAA Henlopen Conference crown. The Vikings fought their way to a three-point lead with just seconds to go, and then watched Polytech’s Richard Hicks sink a three-pointer, tying the score and sending the game into overtime.

Cape allowed Polytech to jump out to a four-point lead before battling back, again leading by three points with only seconds left in the overtime period. This time Polytech hit a two-pointer with four seconds to go, and Cape led 66-65 as the overtime buzzer sounded.

If those victories weren’t sweet enough, it must also be noted that Cape’s P.J. Kesmodel, coach of the girls’ lacrosse team that has won the last four Delaware state championships, was voted Harold “Tubby” Raymond Coach of the Year by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association. He coached the team to undefeated seasons in 2010 and 2012, and the Vikings have won 47 straight games against Delaware opponents.

The Cape Gazette joins the entire Cape community in honoring the accomplishments of athletes and coaches who demonstrated determination, skill, and above all, heart on their way to these outstanding victories.
