Four recent high school graduates are receiving support toward their college educations from scholarship funds managed by the Greater Lewes Foundation.

Nicholas Figiun, Andrew Flowers and William Chapman, all graduating seniors from Cape Henlopen High School, are the recipients of 2014 distributions from the George HP Smith Scholarship Fund, created in honor of the former mayor of Lewes and longtime teacher in the Cape District.

The Maureen Schab Educational Fund award this year went to Erika Komp, a Cape Henlopen graduate. The scholarship will provide support to Komp as she pursues a degree in art and elementary education at the University of Delaware. Describing teaching as a lifelong dream, Komp was active in National Honor Society, Future Educators’ Club, Girl Scouts and the Prom Committee. She taught art to third-graders as her senior internship. Maureen Schab of Lewes was a beloved educator for many years in the Cape district.

Alexandra (Shandra) Furtado is the recipient of the Cresson Scholarship Fund, awarded each year to the winner of a countywide essay competition. Jim Cresson was a reporter for the Cape Gazette. Furtado will attend George Washington University this fall where she plans to study, and eventually research and write about, ocean and marine conservation issues. A Sussex Tech graduate, Furtado played lacrosse and belonged to the National Honor Society, Key Club and Yearbook staff. She has also volunteered at the Lewes-based Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute.

The Gallo Realty-Touch of Italy Foundation has awarded its 2014 scholarship to Brenna Gause, a Sussex Technical HS honors graduate. An accomplished singer, Brenna will major in musical theater at New York University. She has participated with the All State Chorus, Sussex Tech Bella Voce and Chamber ensembles, Clear Space Theatre Co., and Sussex Tech Drama Club, in addition to being selected as the Lee Mitchell Scholar and performer for the Southern Delaware Choral Society.
