Greet to demonstrate plant based cooking and eating at HLFM July 27

The freshest local summer produce will be at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market held Saturday, July 27, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Lewes Historical Society, 110 Shipcarpenter St.

The HLFM continues its popular educational series with a presentation at 10 a.m. by Dorothy Greet, noted Lewes plant-based food educator. Greet turned to whole food plant-based oil-free cooking and eating after learning that her cardiovascular disease could be reversed through nutrition. Subsequently, she obtained a certificate in plant-based nutrition from Cornell and now shares her knowledge and experience with others in her classes offered through Beebe Medical Center, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and other venues upon request.

The peach raffle is over and the winners' name are all-around Lewes volunteers Linda and Jim Gaskill.

The market continues its Annual Free Bike Raffle tradition. This year, the bike is a 2013 Electra Coaster 3i, three-speed cruiser. It is a bright green flash color, and has whitewall tires and a cushy white seat. The big bell sounds like a doorbell, and, of course, the bike comes with an easy-release basket that can be taken to market. The winning ticket will be drawn Saturday, Aug. 31. Market patrons can enter every Saturday they come to market.

Starting this year, the market is processing SNAP (EBT food stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 in SNAP with HLFM “Bonus Bucks.” SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information Tent at the market to redeem their Bonus Bucks.

Late July means Delmarva farms are in full swing with summer’s bounty. At the market, patrons will find everything from vegetables harvested just hours before the market to fresh baked breads just out of the oven. The market’s wide variety of vendors offer produce, meat, chicken, lamb, dairy products, and many other agricultural offerings. Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season, and on the HLFM Facebook page. Newsletters the remainder of the month will highlight featured vendors and selected produce. Last Saturday, the market’s younger patrons enjoyed "Oliver’s Vegetables" at the Children’s Reading Program. This week, Oliver is back in "Oliver’s Fruit Salad." Read by Maureen Miller, children’s librarian from Lewes Public Library, this book continues the culinary education of Oliver, a choosey eater. Oliver enjoys helping his grandfather grow and pick fruit from the garden, but even though he enjoys the bountiful produce, he won't eat it. Oliver’s grandfather sizes up this situation and enlists Oliver's aid in making a big, colorful fruit salad. Gazing at the irresistible bowl of fruit, Oliver takes a taste and finds that he adores fruit after all.
