Lewes — In a "ground adding" ceremony, local businessman Cliff Diver officially kicked off the construction phase of the Denniston Place townhome project in Lewes.

Located at the corner of Savannah Road and Massachusetts Avenue in Lewes Beach, the complex will consist of two buildings of four townhomes surrounding a French-inspired serenity garden.

"I wanted to say thanks to Lewes for showing some faith in what we're trying to do here," Diver said at the ceremony. "This is something 10 to 15 years from now you'll drive by and think 'that was a pretty good one.'"

Diver is working with John Schneider of Broadpoint Construction to bring his vision to fruition. Construction is expected to begin soon. Diver has entrusted realtors Carrie Lingo and Murray Padgett with selling the units, and to date three of the eight units have been sold.

Denniston Place is being constructed on the former home of the Lewes Post Office annex. When the postal service moved its distribution center to Rehoboth Beach, the annex building was left vacant.

Diver, the property owner, approached the city with the idea of a townhome project. Using a special exception in city code for building residential units in the marine commercial district, Diver was able to win approval for his project.
