Guess who came to dinner?
Wow! After a surprisingly chilly August, it was a near picture-perfect Labor Day weekend. I enjoyed it to the fullest. I even got out and did a few vacation-type things, such as going to Hammerheads at the Indian River Inlet Marina, just in time to hear Lower Case Blues. I also made homemade burgers on the grill.

To kick off the holiday weekend, my husband and I had dinner with a couple of our friends and I made Korean barbecue. It’s still summer, and with that pulled-pork flavor, it was the perfect way to savor the end of the season. As my friends stepped out of the car, they had with them something I didn’t expect to see – Dogfish Head Punkin Ale! It was a reminder that even though we have a teensy bit of summer left we’re on the threshold of fall. We can celebrate autumn's onset with pumpkin-flavored beer. The surprise guest at dinner brought a smile to my face and a pumpkin-laced reminder that fall boots and scarves are just around the bend.
But before we go hanging up our bathing suits for the season, I'd like to take a moment to really define the shoulder season — with beer. What I mean to say is, we are so lucky for so many reasons and during this in-between time, and we get to enjoy a unique juxtaposition. The weather is still warm. It’s still technically summer, and yet we’re rolling out the fall scenery.
Two really awesome things we should take an extra moment to appreciate? Delaware has Dogfish Head Craft Brewery cranking out the Punkin Ale and the weather is so mild you can still hit the beach. I ask: Is it not magic?
So, while we’ve got this time left, and since we all did so well getting through a heavy-tourism season (kudos to everyone), I want to remind you all to enjoy the duality of September at the beach. Celebrate with football and bikinis. Enjoy laying out with a fall beer in your koozie.
Most of all: Soak up September like it’s going out of style because October will be here before we know it.
