Harry J. Stevens Jr., Diamond State retiree
Harry J. Stevens Jr., 81 of Lewes, formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Stevens was born May 13, 1931, in Wilmington, son of the late Harry J. and Margaret (Fader) Stevens Sr. Harry was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Diamond State Telephone Company in 1988 after 33 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 in Lewes and the Telephone Pioneers. Harry received the Elk of the Year in 1990-91 and enjoyed fishing and crabbing.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary I. Stevens in 2010; and a brother, Walter Stevens. He is survived by his four children, Kathleen M. Combs of Wilmington, Harry J. StevensIII of Harrisburg, Pa., Frank J. (Karen) Stevens of Wilmington, and James C. Stevens of Lewes; two grandchildren, Charles Combs of San Francisco, Calif. and Max Stevens of Harrisburg; two brothers, Joseph Stevens and George “Bobby” (Rocky) Stevens all of Wilmington; two sisters, Betty DiMartini of Broomfield, Colo. and Peggy (Bud) Gorgens of Marco Island, Fla.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
