Hazel Pohlmann, world traveler

Sep 10, 2013
Hazel Pohlmann

Hazel Anna Steinmann Pohlmann of Milford went to her heavenly home Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013. She was born Oct. 8, 1917, to Ernst Henry Steinmann and Emma Henrietta Riefesel Steinmann, the third of six children. She grew up in Hannibal, Mo.

She met her husband on a blind date while he was in the U.S. Army. They were married May 16, 1941. After Edgar returned from serving in World War II, they resided in Rolla, Mo. Edgar’s work took them to Cahokia, Ill., where they lived for many years and where they raised their three children. Later the family lived in different locations including a time in Thailand, and settled in College Park, Md. The couple spent 57 happy years together traveling in the states in their travel trailer as well as traveling extensively internationally.

After Edgar’s passing Nov. 20, 1998, Hazel lived with her elder daughter’s family in Milford. She attended the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach. Hazel was devoted to her church. Over the years, in different Lutheran churches, she participated in choir, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Ladies Aid Society, Sand Dollars, many outreach missions, the Lord’s Cupboard and numerous other activities.

She loved gardening, embroidering and reading. Her ready smile and sweet nature will be missed by many. Her family was very precious to her, especially her great-grandchildren.

Hazel is survived by her three children and their families: Carole Anna Pohlmann Peterson and her husband Harold “Pete” of Milford; Janet Gail Pohlmann Adams and her husband Daryl of Mankato, Minn.; and Donald Wayne Pohlmann and his wife Christine of Damascus, Md.; her grandchildren, Debra Lynn Peterson Lennox and her husband Todd of Georgetown, and Jennifer Ellen Peterson Parnell and her husband Michael of Milford; and her great-grandchildren, Bethany Elizabeth Lennox of Georgetown and the University of Rochester, Ethan Scott Lennox of Georgetown, and Skyler Morgan Parnell of Milford.

A memorial service in celebration of Hazel’s life will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach. Friends may visit with the family after 9 a.m. and are also invited to a luncheon following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Memorial Fund of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.

Arrangements handled by Rogers Funeral Home, Milford.
