Heavy rains don't deter runners from Dewey Five and Dime

Downpours or soupy drizzle - makes no difference to running crowd

Reasons to run a Races2Run 10K in Dewey Beach didn’t outnumber all the reasons why not to Aug. 3 as an overnight deluge gave little promise of retreating into regular soupy and steamy humidity.

But the rain backed off and 130 runners decided to test their mettle and endure an undercoating ocean spray a block off the beach from puddles splashed by cars and trucks and fellow bipeds bent on leaving them in their wake. The thing about the goal-oriented running crowd is they finish what they start, soggy or sedate.

Jeremy Rapposelli, 18, of Newark won the race in 36:58, followed by Robbie Horstman, 29, in 39:09, Brandt Chi, 49, 39:15; Sean Walsh, 22, 41:29; and Paul Montini, 46, 41:41.

The women’s leader board showed Lauren Bearnarth, 27, running 45:35; Susan Murray, 50, 46:07; Mardiny Ung, 47, 46:47; Robin Lerner, 51, 47:31; and Anne Riley, 28, 49:54.

The 5K race was enticing for the fast and furious, let’s-get-this-over-with crowd and saw 178 runners finish, led by 17-year-old Ben Ziegler from Bethlehem Freedom High School in Pennsylvania in 16:50.  The rest of the top five were Dalton Hengst, 14, 17:25; Patrick Neville, 40, 17:34; Andrew Jakubowitch, 36, 17:44; and Martin Rodriquez, 32, 19:03.

A portion of the proceeds for the Highway One 5K and 10K go to the Dewey Beach Patrol. The DBP will be at the USLA Lifeguard Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va., Wednesday, Aug. 6.

The next races2run event at the beach is the third Dewey Beach Buddy Run Sunday, Aug. 10, at McKinley Avenue on the bay.
