HLFM continues Fall Market Oct. 26 at Shields parking lot

Market continues at Shields Saturday mornings until Nov. 23
Oct 23, 2013

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market Fall Market continues this Saturday, Oct. 26, with more than 20 vendors. From 9 a.m. to noon, the market will be held in the parking lot of Shields Elementary School at the intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive.

The market will continue at Shields each Saturday morning through Nov. 23. The HLFM is the largest producer-only market in Delaware and was recently named the top celebrated Farmers Market in Delaware by American Farmland Trust.

Last Saturday's nicer weather brought out many HLFM patrons eager to purchase the farmers' fall offerings, and this Saturday, farmers will have available an array of cool-weather vegetables including kale, radicchio, bok choy, escarole, pumpkins, hakurei turnips, sweet potatoes and carrots.

Also available will be freshly laid eggs, yogurt, butter, chicken, pork, artisan breads and cheeses, and much more. In fact, many of the small local farmers in the market planted special crops so an abundance of produce would be available for the HLFM in October and November. Thanksgiving turkeys can be ordered as well. Market organizers want to remind patrons that the market is open rain or shine.

At its Shields location, the market will continue to process SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 in SNAP with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information Tent at the market to redeem their Bonus Bucks.

Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season, and on the HLFM Facebook page. Newsletters the remainder of the month highlight featured vendors and selected produce. To receive the HLFM newsletter, email historiclewesfarmersmarket@comcast.net.
