HLFM market vendors Black Hog and Pure Harvest to demonstrate Sept. 28

Casa San Francisco food drive set
Sep 25, 2013

Saturday, Sept. 28 is the last day the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be held at the Lewes Historical Society grounds for this season. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon at 110 Shipcarpenter St., at the corner of Shipcarpenter and West Third streets.

But this isn’t the end of the HLFM season! From Oct. 5 through Nov. 23, 9 a.m. to noon, the HLFM will continue to provide fresh produce and other mouthwatering offerings at the Shields Elementary School parking lot just off the intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive.

The final demonstrations in the HLFM’s educational series are quite a finale to this popular program. First, at 9:30 a.m., John Feliciani and Helen Waite of the market’s own Black Hog Farm will share how they developed Black Hog Farm and their vision for the future of the farm. Feliciani then will provide invaluable insights into plant propagation techniques.

As market patrons know, Black Hog Farm is operated by a family of fourth- and fifth-generation farmers who are dedicated to producing quality farm products. Black Hog is dedicated to farming sustainably for the benefit of future generations with the hope of keeping the art of traditional farming alive.

Next, at 10:30 a.m., Steve Bell of the market’s Pure Harvest Farm will discuss its pasture-raised, organically fed chickens and turkeys as well as their eggs and production processes. Bell will show how to prepare a dry rub to prepare Peking style chicken. He will also demonstrate how to part a whole chicken safely and efficiently.

This week’s market features terrific fall season offerings. There will be pork, free-range chicken and eggs, lamb, yogurt and milk, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuces and many other agricultural offerings. Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season, and on the HLFM Facebook page. Newsletters the remainder of the month will highlight featured vendors and selected produce. To receive the HLFM newsletter, email historiclewesfarmersmarket@comcast.net to be added to the HLFM subscription list.

This Saturday and throughout the fall market at Shields, the market will continue to glean (gather together donated food from vendors) to give to Casa San Francisco’s food pantry in Milton. However, the food pantry needs a little bit extra this year to help folks get through the fall and winter, so the HLFM is sponsoring a food drive this Saturday, Sept. 28.

Bring donations to the HLFM Information Table at the market. The food pantry has requested: spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf-stable milk, rice and beans. Honor their mission and the health needs of folks who use the food pantry by providing healthy foods.

The market is also processing SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 in SNAP with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information Tent at the market to redeem their bonus bucks.

More information about the market is available at www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.
