Ice Cream Store to host Social and Taste-Testing Contest May 8

Presenting 22 new flavors from noon to 7 p.m.
May 05, 2014
Three of 22 newly-created ice creams vying for tasters’ votes and a spot on The Ice Cream Store’s nationally-applauded list of unique flavors are (l-r) Sangria, an Italian Sorbetto recipe with an intense fruity and wine flavor; Catching Fire, an incredibly refreshing orange/yellow colored African Vanilla ice cream blended with orange juice and mango, and completed with a swirl of real blended strawberries; and I Don’t Give a Fork, an African Vanilla ice cream chock full of so many treats (brownie and pretzel pieces, crushed Oreo cookies, cookie dough and mini chocolate chips) that it’s served with a big fork to help people eat it.

Ice cream maker Chip Hearn invites everyone to sample 22 extraordinary new flavors at the 7th Annual Ice Cream Social and Taste-Testing Contest to be held from noon to 7 p.m., Thursday, May 8, at The Ice Cream Store, located on the south side of Rehoboth Avenue at the Boardwalk.

Hearn, whose ice cream creations have earned praise from every major television network and many leading national news publications and periodicals including Reader’s Digest, Newsweek, New York Times, USA Today, Better Homes and Gardens, Gourmet Magazine and the Washington Post, initiated the annual Rehoboth Beach event to give the public a voice in choosing what flavors to feature in the coming summer season.

“We only have room for so much ice cream, so when we add a flavor we have to eliminate a different one. That’s why we let people tell us which ones they really like - and which ones they wish we would never make again,” Hearn said.

Drawing a few hundred people at the start, the event grew to well over 1,000 people in 2013. Those attending this Thursday will find simplified ballots and an ice cream selection guaranteed to have something to please every type of ice cream-lover - from traditionalists to connoisseurs of the experimental and bizarre.
